The eye exams at Del Mar Eyecare are not ordinary eye exams. We call our exams "eye health exams." In this exam you will not only get a prescription for glasses or contacts. We will thoroughly screen you for many types of systemic diseases. This could include diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, multiple sclerosis and brain tumors. Of course, eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration will be checked.
Dr. Chan will do a computerized visual field test to check the function of your retina and pathway of the optic nerve to the brain. He may also find it necessary to take a picture of your optic nerve. This is done to document how structures in your eye look so that any changes over time can be detected.
When prescribing contact lenses, Dr. Chan will use a computerized corneal topographer to map out your cornea so that the contact lenses will be contoured to your cornea properly. This will allow you to achieve comfortable clear vision.
The topographer is also a very important diagnostic instrument used in orthokeratology (OK), a procedure which reduces nearsightedness. OK has been around for over 40 yrs. This procedure uses a series of lenses to reshape the cornea and may take months to accomplish. With recent advances in contact lens design, Accelerated Orthokeratology (AOK), can quickly reshape the cornea without surgery in a period of weeks!
Our philosophy has been one that detects or prevent diseases early before they get out of hand where costly treatment may be needed.
